NEW DELHI: It's official now. The much-awaited second airport for Delhi
at Greater Noida's Jewar is not going to be a reality anytime soon.
Doing a U-turn, Union minister of state for aviation Mahesh Sharma on Tuesday told Rajya Sabha that the government has not cleared any proposal to set up a second airport in the national capital. On June 26, Sharma had said that the aviation ministry had cleared the Greater Noida airport and that the proposal would be sent to the Union Cabinet for clearance.
After Sharma made this announcement, Union aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju had also contradicted him earlier this month. He clearly denied any knowledge of a proposal for an airport in Greater Noida. "Please ask Mr Sharma... Anybody can give suggestion, anybody can write (to the ministry). I don't even know whether it (proposal for a new airport) should go to the Cabinet," Raju had said.
