Kochi: Hardly a week after the Customs arrested an Irish man for trying to smuggle in 10 kg of gold into the state, the Customs officials on Monday arrested a 46-year-old South African woman for possessing 14 kilograms of white powder suspected to be Ephedrine at Cochin International Airport.
The woman has been identified as Dorcas Dolly, 46, native of South Africa. The Officers of Air Intelligence Unit, Air Customs, Cochin Airport, Nedumbassery, intercepted her when she was attempting to depart to Malawi via Doha by Jet Airways Flight No. 9W 556 on Sunday midnight.
Ephedrine, a precursor chemical to methamphetamine popularly known as ice or crystal,is a controlled substance under the NDPS Act 1985. The drug is valued approximately at `22 crore in the international market.
Though she feigned ignorance, a detailed examination on her baggage, resulted in the recovery of the contraband cleverly concealed in ladies vanity bags placed in two checked in baggage.
