New Delhi: Jet fuel prices may be at a five-year low but don't expect airfares to drop. Airlines say fares are already at rock bottom levels during the lean July-September travel season and rule out any further cuts. But at the same time, they promise more discount schemes in coming days.
"Domestic fares are up to 20% lower than same time last year. Airlines are very aggressive with promotional offers to drive up occupancy levels in the lean travel season. Due to the low fares, we are again witnessing a resurgent domestic passenger growth," said Sharat Dhall, president of travel portal Yatra. The main reasons for low fares in the ongoing lean season are addition of capacity in the market with new players like Vistara and AirAsia India having taken to the skies and born-again SpiceJet adding planes to its fleet, while offering rapid fire discount schemes on an almost daily basis.
