Come this winter, domestic flyers will have more flying options to choose from. Leading airlines like IndiGo, Jet Airways and Air India are looking to add to the existing fleet to cater to the rising demand report CNBC-TV18’s Sindhu Bhattacharya and Ronjoy Bannerjee. Domestic carriers are in the process of scaling up fleet size ahead of the holiday season in the winters. Starting October the number of weekly flights is expected to jump 14 per cent over the winter season in 2014-15, which Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials say is substantially more than the usual three to four percent increase witnessed every year during this time.
The increase is attributed to the entry of new airlines that are vying to capture the market. In October the number of weekly flights will increase to 13,951 as against less than 12,000 in the corresponding period last year. DGCA data shows that IndiGo is planning to operate 4,359 weekly flights up from 3,733 flights in winter 2014-15. Jet Airways will operate 3,307 weekly flights, up from 2,498 operated during the previous winters. Air India plans to operate 1,705 weekly flights as against 1,676 weekly flights previously and its subsidiary Alliance Air will operate 270 weekly flights against 210 weekly flights last year.
