Year on, Mumbai loses seaplane service

MehAir, the city's only seaplane service operator, has suspended operations in Maharashtra, and will focus on Goa and Kerala during the tourist season starting Diwali.

Launched in August 2014 with two Cessna seaplanes, MehAir failed to attract passengers for its intrastate flight services. Red-tapism, environment issues, and inclement weather added to its woes.

One of the company's big-ticket projects was the seaplane services between Juhu and Girgaum Chowpatty. The aviation sources said that several corporate houses showed keen interest, and were willing to book the entire plane on a daily basis, but the company couldn't launch on the route as it could not get clearance for an air-conditioned tent at Girgaum Chowpatty. Now, the company has ordered two more Cessnas worth over $3.1 million (around Rs 20 crore), and is moving operations to Goa and Kerala, where it will launch services starting September 10, covering Thiruvananthpuram, Kollam, Kochi and Kozhikode.
