Shimla: Come October, and flight services for Shimla will resume after a
two-year break, as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has completed
most of the work on runway. At present, Shimla is the only state capital
in India without air connectivity.
Shimla airport director Parvindra Tiwari said the resurfacing work would be completed by September 30, after which airport would be ready for operation. He said that length of Kullu-Manali airport at Bhuntar is 1,050m where ATR 72 of Alliance Air can land with around 50 passengers. To ensure landing of bigger aircraft, the width of runway at Jubbarhatti has been expanded from 23m to 30m. To ensure safe landing, edge lights have been fixed and precision approach path indicator (PAPI) lighting installed, which gives 3 degree angle to aircrafts and supports landing. Around Rs 690 lakh has been spent on all this, sources said.
