Budget airline SpiceJet in India is profitable again and is talking
fleet expansion plans that could mean years of work for Wichita’s
commercial aviation cluster.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, SpiceJet could order more than 200 new aircraft in the next five months.
The airline is reportedly talking with multiple manufacturers about potential orders, including jet talks with the Boeing Co. and Airbus and turboprop orders with others including Embraer and Bombardier.
The airline’s managing director, Ajay Singh, told the Wall Street Journal that the carrier will order between 100 and 150 Boeing 737s or Airbus A320 aircraft to boost its narrowbody jet fleet.
Orders for the 737, especially, would mean work for Wichita.
The city’s largest employer, Spirit AeroSystems Inc. builds about 70 percent of each 737 for Boeing.
The company also builds wing components on the Airbus A320 at its plant in Prestwick, Scotland.
