Despite repeated appeals from the Punjab government to name the new
airport terminal in Chandigarh after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, the
request was not granted even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated
the international terminal Friday.
The Punjab assembly had passed a resolution to name the new airport as ‘Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh International Airport Mohali-Chandigarh’, and the same had been reiterated by the Punjab government in its communication with the civil aviation ministry. Punjab as well as Haryana had contributed 24.5 per cent of the total cost of the airport and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had covered the rest.
