New Delhi: Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh? As things stand now, the airport is hanging in the air.
A tug of war between the civil aviation minister and his junior on where a planned second airport should come up in the National Capital Region has virtually put the brakes on a decision on the site.
Not only that, the difference of opinion between aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and his junior Mahesh Sharma has pushed the proposal - aimed at easing the burden on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport - towards competing sites in two states.
An internal committee of the ministry had, after a technical feasibility study, recommended to Raju that Bhiwadi, a Rajasthan town about 70km south of Delhi, would be a suitable site.
But Sharma has now asked the committee to consider Jewar in Greater Noida, about 100km southeast of Delhi. The junior minister, a BJP MP, represents Gautam Budh Nagar constituency that includes Noida and Greater Noida.
