New Luggage Management System is Excess Baggage, Say Pvt Airlines

New Delhi: A pact between Airport Authority of India (AAI) and airline IT solution major SITA for hi-tech baggage management at airports has come under sharp criticism from some private carriers, who say it will spike airfares and would be of little use as airlines already follow the established guidelines.

Private carriers, such as Indigo, were vocal about the new arrangement that is being implemented across 36 AAI-managed airports, with Indigo president, Aditya Ghosh, flagging the issue at a meeting of the airlines with AAI on December 16, 2015. Expressing his unwillingness to use the facility, Ghosh said they are already following a system in accordance with the guidelines of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India. Ghosh also placed on record his fears of passenger fares going up on adopting the new system. He was supported by all major airlines.

“We were not consulted when this pact was done. What is the utility of it when the airlines do not want such a facility? AAI should have sought our views before the tie-up. We regret the decision. It will put a burden on the flyers,” said an airline official.

Chairman of AAI, R K Srivastava, insisted at the meeting that all the airline operators should use the facility and should initiate the process in a time-bound manner. When contacted, AAI said most of the airlines have signed the agreement with SITA, except for Indigo at Kolkata and Chennai, and Jet Airways at Kolkata.
