Gaya: The much delayed project to expand the Gaya airport runway from the existing 2286 metres to 2886 metres got a major boost as the Gaya DM Kumar Ravi, in an official communication addressed to the Director (Operations) Civil Aviation Deptt has offered 100 acres of land for the runway expansion and allied developmental plans. The DM has requested the Aviation Deptt Director to authorise some official to take possession of the land on the deptt's behalf.
As per the contents of the DM's letter, the 100 acres are spread over four different villages adjoining the airport boundary. As of now, Gaya airport is spread over 971 acres and with another 100 acres available on both the eastern and western sides of the runway, bigger planes with about 300 passenger capacity would land and take off from the airport.
As of now, planes bigger in size than Airbus 320 with an all economy class passenger capacity of 180 can not be handled by the airport. As the A320 fleet of Air India has grown old with most of the planes older than 25 years, the planes suffering from metal fatigue and other operational hazards, generally carry a lower than permissible load.
