9 flights cancelled, ops move to Vadodara

Airline companies and airport authorities have geared up for change in their summer schedule with airport authorities announcing the runway will remain closed for re-carpeting from today. As per authorities, the 3.5km runway at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) will remain closed daily from 10am to 6pm daily for a year, i.e. till April 2017.
Airline companies, therefore, have implemented changes in their flight schedules for the coming year. While flights operating in the afternoon have been shifted to early morning or late evening, several airlines have opted to shift their services to the Civil Airport Harni (Vadodara). At least nine flights have been cancelled till further notice.

The SVPI has a 3.5km long runway that has not been resurfaced for close to eight years now. However, aviation experts state that runways that see heavy traffic should ideally be resurfaced and re-carpeted once in every three years. Interestingly, the changes are likely to add to the chaotic situation at the city airport where passengers have already been instructed to report two hours before the flight is scheduled for departure.
