Aerobridge becomes operational at Surat airport

The Diamond City's airport is set to match the standards of other airports in the country with the operationalization of aerobridge facility from Thursday.
The aerobridge facility was inaugurated at the airport in the evening with the arrival of Air India's (AI) Airbus 320 from New Delhi. The airport has two aerobridges and they will be used alternatively.

Surat is the second airport after Ahmedabad to have the aerobridge facility. Sources said the installation and construction of foundation and other facilities for the aerobridge were completed much ahead of its scheduled operation. However, final clearance from Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for safety was awaited.
Passengers will not have to board a bus or walk up to the terminal building to collect their luggage after the installation of the aerobridge facility at the airport. They can directly board the flight from the terminal and return through the aerobridge to collect their luggage. The aerobridge facility is seen by many as a step forward to attract more airline companies to the city and it will help the airport get international status.
The airport terminal building design was conceptualized keeping in view the provision for the aerobridge facility. The construction of the aerobridge has incurred an expense of Rs5 crore.
"We have operationalized the aerobridge facility at the airport. It was officially inaugurated and pressed into service with the Air India's Airbus 320 from New Delhi," said airport director Pramod Thakre.
