Kanpur: The airstrip in Saifai is likely to be equipped with night landing facility soon.
District magistrate Nitin Bansal said, "The airstrip is likely to get night landing facility by August. Rail India technical and economic services (RITES) limited is in the process of expanding the infrastructure. An amount of Rs6.20 crore has already been released by the state civil aviation department."
The 2.70-km-long Saifai airstrip is used for landing state aircraft whenever SP chief Mulayam Singh or chief minister Akhilesh Yadav visit Etawah.
Every year, Samajwadi Party leaders and Bollywood stars fly to Mulayam's home town for Saifai Mahotsav. In May and later in August last year, Mirage 2000 fighter jets had operated from Saifai airstrip.
Even, the Boeing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had come to attend the marriage function of Mulayam's grandson last year, used the airstrip. In November, Oscar award winner and renowned singer and musician A R Rahman and his team members had also landed at Saifai airstrip to perform during the 76th birthday celebrations of Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav.
