With the summer pushing up commuter demand for travel options to the popular holiday destination of Goa, airlines are falling in line to cater to the trend. Now, SpiceJet has increased seating capacity on its domestic Pune-Goa route as part of an enhanced summer schedule, effective from April 17.
The airline has also undertaken equipment upgradation on the route, moving from a Bombardier Q400 aircraft (which has a seating capacity of 78) to a Boeing 737 (which can accommodate up to 186 passengers). The flight will be operational on all days, except Saturday, and departs for Goa at 12.15 pm to reach within an hour; the return flight is at 2 pm.
Currently, there are only two flights to Goa from Pune airport. Air India also has a daily afternoon flight. However, due to the limited capacity of both flights, commuters have long been facing unavailability problems.
"Compared to Mumbai, Pune has very limited flights to Goa — just two are not sufficient. It is not always convenient to take a flight from Mumbai. So, commuters, especially tourists, have to opt for overnight bus journeys. Additional seating capacity will help accommodate more commuters during peak seasons," said Anant Karkhanis, a frequent flyer.
To cater to peak summer rush, SpiceJet has also provided a new schedule from March to October — apart from equipment upgradation, three new flights and six new frequencies have been added, offering more seats connecting key destinations. Shilpa Bhatia, vice-president, commercial, SpiceJet, told Mirror, "We would like to thank our customers for continuous support in helping us achieve the highest load factor consistently for the past 10 months. Our new summer schedule is an extension of our existing strategy to cater to the robust market demand for the coming holiday season."
