Air India readies to give wings to desi artisans, jettisons leather to bring khadi onboard

New Delhi: Passengers flying business class on Air India will soon be in for a khad

ai treat as the airline has decided to replace its leather kits with those of the hand-woven fabric.

The state-run carrier has already placed an order of 1.85 lakh units of amenity kits with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission.

According to sources, KVIC will supply the kits in four months, 6,000 of which are for passengers travelling first-class and about 1.70 lakh for business class passengers, thus creating over 4.40 lakh man hours. The development comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting that all departments step up the use of khadi to support rural artisans.

Embracing his suggestion, Air India has decided to start providing the kits from this week.
