Fliers rue over sky-high fares from Coimbatore

Coimbatore: High demand for tickets and fewer flights makes flying out of the city expensive. Frequent travellers say fares are 30% to 50% higher than fares at Chennai, Kochi or Bengaluru airports to international and domestic destinations.
Airlines are not increasing the frequency on domestic routes. The need for bilateral flying rights and infrastructure limitations at the airport stand but a curb on the frequency of international flights.

A fare check on a few travel websites for international destinations show that a return flight to Rome in the second week of August costs Rs58,193. The same route is priced 40% cheaper from Chennai and Bangalore and is priced at Rs39,000 and Rs41,800 respectively. Flights from Chennai to Los Angeles priced at Rs 80,000 in September are priced at Rs 1,03,000 from Coimbatore.
Return fare for flights on Chennai-New Delhi sector for July third week is priced at around Rs7,500 but on Coimbatore-Delhi sector return fare is Rs12,600. A return ticket on Chennai-Mumbai sector is priced at Rs5,000 but on Coimbatore-Mumbai sector it is priced at Rs7,000 and above.
