Hi-tech trolleys to roll into airport from August 1

Chennai: Forced to cough up extra at the last minute for overweight baggage? Help is on the way — on four wheels. “We will soon have a mechanism in trolleys which will highlight the weight a trolley is handling. This will help passengers remove the additional luggage so that they can check in peacefully,” says Abirchand Nahar, chairman of Ad Bureau Advertising, which has signed a contract with the Airport Authority of India.

“Initially, we will be rolling out 4,000 trolleys in phases. These will replace the old trolleys,” says Nahar.

With the value addition, Chennaites will now have to pay for these trolleys. “We plan to generate a revenue model through the use of trolleys like in the US and Europe. We will also be introducing an app for airport trolleys,” says Nahar, who also plans to replicate it in other airports.
Nahar plans to make extensive use of technologies such as IPS (inland positioning systems), radio frequency identification, LED light modules and other mechanical and manual techniques to make the trolleys attractive to advertisers, while increasing the efficiency of operations.
