LG optimistic of resuming flight services in Puducherry

Puducherry: Lt Governor Kiran Bedi expressed optimism that the flight services that were suspended in the Union territory of Puducherry will be resumed soon. "With the new aviation policy the chances are very bright and Puducherry can be quickly reconnected," she told reporters after visiting the airport.
She said the Union civil aviation minister Gajpathi Raju will visit Puducherry on Monday. "We will request him to start flight services here. What a wonderful premises (airport), which is not income generating at the moment. Only Airport authority of India maintaining it. Once we start services government of India can recover, airline will earn, passengers benefit of service and Puducherry gets benefit as a whole. It is a win-win situation for everybody.
We already have the infrastructure. The only thing is expansion and for expansion we need Tamil Nadu's help to give us extra land for operating bigger aircraft," she said.
She said the new aviation policy of the Union government will subsidize the travel for airlines and passengers will pay much less. The policy aimed to connect smaller airports with main cities, she said.
Flight services that were launched as early as in 1990 in Puducherry were suspended within two years. Vayudoot, an erstwhile joint-venture between Indian Airlines and Air India, extended air services connecting Chennai and Puducherry from 1990 to 1992. But the services were stopped in 1992 due to shortage of aircrafts. Moreover the runway (1,222 metres) of the airport constructed in 1989 was not sufficient to handle medium type of aircraft. The government acquired 19.92 hectares of land for 18.67 crore and handed over to airports authority of India (AAI) for expansion. The AAI completed the first phase extending the runway to 1,500 meters and constructed the new terminal building.
