Visakhapatnam: At a time when footfalls at the Visakhapatnam Airport has been increasing rapidly during the last one year, the number of passengers flying to the metros - especially Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad - has also witnessed a steep ascent in the last 10 months.
In fact, as per statistics available on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation website, between August 2015 and May 2016, passenger footfalls on the Vizag-Delhi route grew by a whopping 149% in the last 10 months with the maximum of 54 per cent being on the Vizag-Mumbai route.
Similarly, the number of passengers on the Vizag-Hyderabad route has also witnessed an increase between 13% (comparing May 2016 with August 2015) and 18% (comparing April 2016 to August 2015).
However, passenger footfalls on the Vizag to Bengaluru and Chennai routes have remained stable, hovering around 33,000 passengers and 11,000 passengers per month, respectively as the number of flights on this route have remained the same. Incidentally, the air traffic to the five metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai constitute about 80-85% of the total passenger footfalls at Visakhapatnam Airport.
