New Delhi: After harvesting rainwater and harnessing solar power, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here is set to embark on another green initiative. Over the next one year, nearly 2.5 lakh trees and shrubs will be planted near the airport.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) plans to landscape an area of about two lakh square metres, almost half of which will be under grass cover.
Around 12 varieties of trees representing different regions of the country will be planted. This is apart from more than 1,000 palm trees and cycads that will be planted near the approach road to Terminal 3. The number of shrubs to be planted is more than two lakh.
“The work of landscaping and planting trees has already started, and is likely to be completed by March 2017,” said an airport official, who didn’t wish to be named.
