Chennai: You are going to miss the smiling woman at the ariport check-in counters in Chennai, but if you are in a hurry, her replacement -- mechanised kiosks -- will make you happy.
Airports Authority of India is planning to have automated kiosks that let passengers punch in the booking number, select a seat, get boarding cards printed, drop the bags nearby and move to board the plane-- all without standing in queue. While the existing system allows self check-in of passengers with only cabin bags, the new kiosks will take care of check-in bags which will be tagged by the machine.
The passenger has to drop the baggage in a nearby slot from where it will be automatically moved to the cargo hold. There will be a system at the drop box to make a payment if the weight of bags exceed the maximum allowed as free.
With minimum human assistance, experience has shown at airports abroad, check-in happens faster. Air India introduced a system at Mumbai airport on April 1 this year by which passengers can print boarding pass and pick baggage tags before dropping bags at a counter. This is being used only for select domestic routes.
