AAI: Surat airport capable of handling 40 flights a day

Surat: Airports Authority of India (AAI) in response to a petition filed in Gujarat high court by Surat Airport Action Committee (SAAC) submitted that Surat airport is categorized as 4C licensed airport and is capable of handling about 40 flights, including that of Airbus-320 and Boeing 737-700 daily.
The high court had issued notices to AAI, Union civil aviation ministry, aviation department of Gujarat government, Air India (AI) and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) subsequent to a writ petition filed by SAAC on the issue of Surat's air connectivity.

The high court had admitted the writ petition filed by Sanjay Ezhava, president of Surat Airport Action Committee (SAAC), a public group crusading for improved air connectivity from Surat, against government authorities and Air India (AI) demanding equality for residents of Surat wanting to fly to various destinations from the city.
The petitioner submitted that the AI was provided bank guarantee, valid up to May 31, 2016, by way of security for an amount worth Rs 3 crore by Surat Flight Support Association (SFSA) for flying Airbus between Delhi and Surat. It was after the bank guarantee in October 2015 that the Air India started Airbus operations from Surat.
