IndiGo Airlines maintained its leadership position in the domestic aviation industry with a 38.2 percent market share in August 2016, according to data released by the regulatory body Directorate General of Civil Aviation. This was marginally higher than the revised figure of 38 percent in July.
In contrast, rival SpiceJet had a 12.7 percent market share, unchanged from July. At second place, Jet Airways’ market share in August also remained nearly unchanged at to 16.9 percent from 17 percent clocked in the previous month.
The number of passengers carried by domestic airlines during the January-August 2016 period increased 23.1 percent to 644.68 lakh from 523.55 lakh in the corresponding period of the previous year.
On a monthly basis, passengers carried in August stood at 83.81 lakh against 67.6 lakh in July, increasing 23.98 percent.
In terms of on-time performance too, IndiGo again led the chart with 83.8 percent of its flights on schedule. Spicejet and Vistara stood a close second with 83.1 percent flights on time. The performance was computed for Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai airports.
