New Delhi: At a time when India has linked its airlines getting prime slots at Dubai Airport to the increase in flying rights sought by UAE carriers, the Dubai Airport has denied that it is deliberately trying to avoid giving slots to Indian airlines. Earlier this year, the aviation ministry had asked Dubai to ensure that the Dubai International Airport (DXB) gives feasible slots to Indian carriers after Indian airlines had complained of not getting the same.
"Slot allocation at DXB is based on international best practices and applies to all airlines equally. In the last 12 months, Indian carriers are operating 35% more seats and 29% more flights to Dubai. We must be doing something right else this growth from India side won't have happened," said Lorne Riley, director (business development) of Dubai Airports.
India will soon start talks with the UAE to increase flying rights or bilaterals and has decided to seek an assurance from Dubai that Indian carriers will get 'right' slots there. Aviation minister AG Raju had this February written to Dubai saying Indian carriers were not able to fully utilise their flying rights to Dubai due to "non-availability of commercially and operationally feasible slots" at DXB. "The Indian carriers have informed that they are not being provided the desired slots at Dubai airport, and Dubai Airport Authority has been turning down the requests of Indian carriers, or providing options which are not viable for operations," his letter had said.
