Surat airport likely to get customs facility soon

The Surat airport may soon get custom facilities to cater to the international flights and cargo operations.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has written to the customs department for setting up custom facilities at the airport. Recently, the custom officials visited the airport and suggested expansion of the terminal building in order to set up the custom facility.
Official sources said that the customs department has suggested few modifications in the terminal business in order to house the customs clearance facility including expansion of the terminal building. Once the expansion and modification of the terminal building is done as per the customs requirement, the airport will soon have customs facility.

Recently, AAI has given approval for setting up of the modular cargo terminal at the airport to cater to the import and export of commodities, horticulture and other sea food items from Surat to various destinations in the country and abroad. The AAI has also sanctioned Rs 10.37 crore expenditure for setting up of the terminal.
The Surat Hira Bourse (SHB) has submitted a proposal to the AAI for providing a strong room space at airport to cater to the import and export of valuable diamonds.
