India asks Qatar to start airline or invest in one in India: Report

Doha: Indian government has asked Qatar to start an airline in India or invest in one during a bilateral meeting, an Indian newspaper reported.

According to the report by The Mint, the Indian civil aviation ministry asked the Qatar government to start an airline in India and be part of country’s growth story.

“They were looking at a regional airline, full fledged national airline or investment in an existing Indian airline,” The Mint quoted an unnamed source.


Civil aviation secretary Rajiv Nayan Choubey confirmed to the newspaper that the aviation ministry has written to the government of Qatar to start an airline in India.

“That’s what we have suggested to them. Look we have a fantastic market—its 100% FDI. Come fly your planes, there is money here (to be made),” Choubey said.

The message was also communicated to Qatar Airways’s CEO Akbar Al Baker when he visited the ministry in recent months, te report added.
