Flights were diverted from Chennai to Bengaluru and other airports after
parts of Chennai came under a veil of smog on Friday morning, caused by
bonfires as people burn their discarded things on Bhogi, the first day
of Pongal festival.Due to poor visibility caused by smog, nearly 20
flights were either delayed or diverted, said sources.
As many as nine flights were diverted to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kochi.
The Air India flight from Sharjah-Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai and another AI flight and a Go Air and Spice Jet flight were diverted to Bengaluru while flights from Abu Dhabi were diverted to Hyderabad.
From Kempegowda International Airport, two Air India and one Indigo flight bound for Chennai were delayed.
