Madurai: The Chettinad Group has offered to support the efforts of Karaikudi Chamber of Commerce and Industries to establish a mini airport in this town and build a world class cricket stadium at Kanadukathan.
Addressing the golden jubilee celebration of the chamber here on Sunday, M. A. M. R. Muthiah alias Ayappan, Managing Director of Chettinad Group, said an air strip was available at Chettinad and the group would support the effort being taken by the chamber for establishing a mini airport.
The chamber, in 2013, had urged the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sanction a mini airport for Karaikudi after he announced that the government proposed to promote 100 new mini airports in anticipation of heavy demand for air travel in future.
Mr. Muthiah said the Chettinad Group proposed to build a modern cricket stadium inside the Annamalai Polytechnic, named after Annamalai Chettiar, the group’s founder. He also assured to set up suitable industry in the town while responding to a plea to this effect made by local MLA and leader of the Congress Legislature Party KR. Ramasamy.
