Kannur airport works gain momentum

Even as the construction works of the Kannur international airport are progressing, efforts to get the sanction of the director general of civil aviation and other agencies have gained momentum.
As part of the licensing process, the security vetting committee of the CISF , customs and the bureau of civil aviation security (BCAS) visited the site and evaluated the security system on Thursday .
The committee, led by BCAS southern regional director Sanjay Sharma, held meetings with the senior officials.The inspection would continue on Friday .
"After the site visit and eval uation, the committee would recommend its suggestions and after implementing it, they would evaluate once again before giving the licence prior to commissioning of the airport," said an official with Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL).

The airport is expected to be inaugurated in September this year. The inspection pertained to the security aspect, including national security , and the team would examine the equipment.
The official also said the work of the airport was progressing and almost 95% of the runway has been completed, while the terminal building was 86% complete.
"The work is in the final stage and our target is to complete it by May-end so that the finishing works could be completed during the monsoon," said the official.
