Puducherry all set to regain its place in the aviation map

Puducherry: Flight services are set to resume from the Puducherry Airport with two operators coming on board the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme to connect the city with a handful of other destinations in the south.

SpiceJet and Air Odisha will be launching operations through the airport here under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme envisaged by the Union Government to boost air connectivity between smaller cities, make flying more affordable and lay the ground for balanced regional growth.

“The Civil Aviation Ministry is expected to make a formal announcement in this regard in a few days,” Chief Secretary Manoj Parida told The Hindu.

SpiceJet, which had been the first to launch flight services from here in 2013, re-enters air space over Puducherry with direct flights connecting Puducherry and Hyderabad. The airline operator is expected to press in a 60-seater ATR aircraft.

Air Odisha will operate flights on the Chennai-Puducherry-Salem-Bengaluru circuit with a 21-seater aircraft.

“We’re looking at restoration of air connectivity from the first week of April,” Mr. Parida said.

In October, 2016, the Government of Puducherry had signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under Regional Connectivity Scheme with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India.
