In six years, annual traffic at airport doubles

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is witnessing an all-time high passenger rate, recorded to be at 57.7 million, with a growth rate of 19.2 per cent, during the fiscal year 2016-17. With this, the airport has achieved 21st rank in passenger volume, in a preliminary survey of top 30 airports, conducted by the Airports Council International in 2016. In financial year 2010-11, the airport handled a total of 29.95 million people. The international and domestic traffic in 2016-2017 was recorded at 15.5 and 42.2 million, respectively. This unprecedented passenger growth has, however, raised concerns about the already crowded domestic terminal of the Delhi airport, which is ready to undergo expansion. “The airport added 9.3 million passengers in 2016-2017.
