New Delhi: Fresh trials of full-body scanners at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport will start next month as security agencies have imported two new ones from Germany after the earlier machines failed to detect contraband and concealed objects.
The new scanners, officials said, have been imported keeping in mind Indian sensibilities as passengers, especially women, had raised privacy and cultural issues during the trial run in December last year.
"The new scanners will only show an outline of the passenger's body on a screen. We had asked the manufacturer of the machine in Germany to tweak specifications as per the Indian standard keeping in mind the sensibilities involved," Central Industrial Security Force director-general O.P. Singh said.
The CISF is in charge of security at airports across the country.
At the trial run last year, multi-fold saris of some women passengers had fooled the machines from the US into raising false alarms. Passengers had also objected to the removal of all metal objects like belts, watches - even mangalsutras - before being subjected to the scan.
