Kannur: The Kannur International Airport which is scheduled to start domestic airline services in June will be a fully solar powered airport.
An official press release said here on Monday that the meeting of the Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL) director board chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram took the decision to install solar power system in the airport for generating power required for the operation of the airport.
Initially the solar power plant with a 7 MW generation capacity will be installed. The capacity will be enhanced to 10 MW in future as the power requirement
increases, the meeting decided.
The release informed that the 69,000 sq. metre area of the total 2,000 acre airport site is occupied by buildings. Solar photovoltaic plant would be installed on the rooftops of the buildings, the release said.
Initially, the plant can general 30,000 units of electricity per day. KIAL will connect the plant to the KSEB grid and procure required power, the release informed.
