Kolkata: It was business as usual in the air traffic control center at Kolkata airport when a system alarm grabbed a controller's attention. A computer generated staccato voice warned: 'Hijack! Hijack!' The plane's transponder was also squawking the hijack code. To make sure the alarm wasn't a false one, the controller needed an affirmation from the captain without alerting the hijackers. He asked the captain to turn right to affirm. As the controller saw the blip on his radar screen move to the right, he called the shift-in-charge to alert the chain of command leading right to the top.

Chennai airport handles largest single-piece cargo consignment
Chennai: On Sunday, Chennai airport handled a single piece of cargo weighing 25 tonnes — the largest individual consignment in recent times, according to officials of AAI.

New traffic plan near airport soon
Chennai: There will soon be a new traffic plan for Chennai airport as the ongoing Metro Rail work has created a bottleneck at its entry point.
Metro work, which includes the construction of a station and viaduct, has been in progress on the airport’s premises for over two years now.
Recently, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) began construction of a support beam for the viaduct near the airport’s entry. This has resulted in congestion during peak hours, according to officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Stranded BA passengers leave country
Mumbai: The 38 passengers stranded at the Mumbai airport after they missed their transit British Airways flight to London due to a delayed arrival of their Air India (AI) flight from Goa, finally left the country by Monday morning, according to airport sources. While AI had accommodated some of the passengers on its own flights to London, the remaining were put on other international airlines by BA.
According to an AI spokesperson, the airline had accommodated some of the passengers on its London flights from Mumbai and Delhi.

GMR refuses to let MMTS up to airport
Hyderabad: The long-pending MMTS rail connectivity to Shamshabad international airport is likely to create a fresh tussle between airport operator GMR and the Telangana state government.
The proposal has been pending for over three years now with GMR refusing to allot land to set up an MMTS station in the airport premises. The MMTS connectivity will spare air passengers from incurring heavy expenditure on cabs for transportation from city to Shamshabad.

Air India to Launch New Delhi-Vijayawada Flight From January 15

Being members of the Star Alliance network, AI and ET will explore expanding their agreement to more destinations in Africa and India.
