Arrested Commissioner suspected to have received wedding gifts from gold smugglers

Thiruvananthapuram: S. Anil Kumar (34), the Assistant Commissioner of Customs at Kochi who was arrested by CBI in connection with gold smuggling on Thursday, was on his very first posting after joining Indian Revenue Service.
He was among the probationers of the 62nd batch of IRS (Customs & Central Excise) Group posted in various zones. An Ayurvedic doctor who had worked with the State Employees State Insurance Corporation until he passed the UPSC's Civil Service examination, Kumar got married on the 7th of this July to an Indian Forest Service officer.
Kumar (34) is the highest among the three customs officials arrested so far in connection with the case from CIAL. Kumar is alleged to have received Rs.5 lakhs and a 42" LED TV, treadmill etc as wedding gifts from T K Fayaz, the kingpin arrested for gold smuggling.
Other officials arrested on October 7 were C. Madhavan, Deputy Commissioner and PP Sunil Kumar, a Preventive officer at CIAL. CBI has seized LED TV sets from some other customs officials too. These TV sets were used to smuggle gold by hiding it inside.
