Ahmedabad: Protesting against the proposed privatization of six airports by the central government, Airport Authority Employees' Union (AAEU) has written a letter to parliamentary standing committee for transport, tourism and culture, citing irregularities in the new bill which will dilute the authority of Airport Authority of India (AAI) and also the air navigation system among other services provided by AAI.
The six airports where privatization is proposed are - Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur and Guwahati.
In a 12-page letter to the committee, AAEU president S R Santhanam has highlighted that certain essential services rendered by the AAI have been delegated to the new Civil Aviation Authority Bill of India (CAA Bill)-2013 to privatize the airports. Excerpt from the letter states: "Why is the government initiating action for privatization when AAI has invested more than Rs 5,000 crores of tax payers' money in the modernization? After modernization, calling for bidding process is a brutal attack on AAI, pushing it into financial distress situation."
