When it comes to the overall development of the Calicut International Airport(CIA), political parties and expatriate organisations lack the vigour they exhibit when the Airport Authority of India (AAI) declared repairs to the runway. AAI has been demanding 385 acres from the government for the further development of the airport for the last few years. Though it is the 12th busiest airport in the country, infrastructure facilities are poor and inadequate when compared to other airports in the state and the country.
CIA now has only 387 acres when compared with 1,300 acres in Kochi, 628 acres at Thiruvananthapuram and 2,000 acres for the upcoming Kannur airport. Though AAI had been requesting the government to hand over 137 acres immediately for the next stage of development, no consensus has been reached with the public about acquiring the land.
“We are facing acute land crunch for further development of the airport. AAI has utilised the entire land we have now. We have been requesting the government for the last few years to acquire 385 acres for the overall development of the airport. The airport will have all the facilities to operate all kinds of aircraft on a par with international standards when the proposed projects in the 385 acres are completed,” CIA director K Peter Abraham said.
