Varanasi: The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has sought 593.77 acre land from the state government for the expansion of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi. After getting a letter from director civil aviation UP (Lucknow) in this regard on March 27, the district administration has sought a detailed report from chief revenue officer and special land acquisition officer regarding availability of land for the expansion plan.
In this regard, ADM (city) Vindhyavasini Rai sent a letter to both the officials on Wednesday. Chief secretary Alok Ranjan will hold a meeting in Lucknow with Varanasi district magistrate to discuss the issue on April 6. The AAI officials will also take part in the proposed meeting.
Director LBS International Airport S K Malik admitted that work on the proposal of airport expansion as per Masterplan-2004 is in progress. However, sources said that "arranging land is not a cakewalk for the officials as the process of land acquisition can be done on Varanasi-Lucknow highway only. There is no possibility of expansion of runway on opposite site due to existence of railway line there.
