New Delhi: n the wake of the Germanwings crash in Europe, aviation regulator DGCA is planning to issue a civil aviation regulation in due course on steps to check the mental health of pilots periodically, with the aviation regulator considering asking airlines to carry out psychological checks on pilots at regular intervals, getting the mental health of applicants checked when they apply to join a flying school and carrying out psychometry tests before the pilot licences are issued.
Sources said the DGCA has already set up a committee to look into the matter and it is likely that pilots of foreign airlines flying to and from India will also be covered under any such new regulations that are issued. On Thursday, the civil aviation ministry also stated that the DGCA has developed an action plan wherein “one of the key safety priorities is to reduce ‘runway excursions and overruns’.” It was also reiterated that “the cabin crew in the flight deck will remain vigilant in case of subtle incapacitation of the flight crew member or any other situation that requires assistance”. The ministry also stated that the “cabin crew shall remain in the flight deck till such time the flight crew member returns to the cockpit”.
