Mumbai: It was drama in mid-air. A doctor couple from Thane rushed to
the rescue as a 63-year-old woman fell unconscious and went into
hypotension on an Air India flight from London to the city. Seeing her
condition, her 65-year-old husband almost fainted. The doctors
stabilized her within the constraints of the aircraft, revived the man
and ensured a smooth flight back home without any diversions for the
medical emergency.
Rukmini Nair and Shivan Kutty, the senior citizen couple from Navi Mumbai, were returning from a Europe tour and had boarded the London-Mumbai AI130 that took off around 1.30pm from Heathrow on Sunday. All was well for three hours into the nine-hour flight, when Rukmini complained of giddiness to her husband. "Soon after, she collapsed," Shivan told TOI. "Just the thought of someone fainting at an altitude of 30,000 to 40,000 feet can be frightful. The doctors practically saved her that day."
Paediatrician Santosh Kadam and physician Vidya Kadam were seated in the 28th row when the emergency announcement for a doctor onboard went out. The Kadams rushed to find Rukmini, seated on the 10th row, unconscious.
