Chennai: A passenger's complaint citing 61 instances of falling glass panels at Chennai airport has led the National Human Rights Commission to issue notices to the civil aviation ministry and the Airports Authority of India.
The two organisations have four weeks to explain the charge of doing nothing despite requests from travellers. All the incidents have occurred since 2013, after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) renovated the airport at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore.
"Providing safety and security to the passengers is one of the cardinal duties of airline operators and airport authorities," Justice D. Murugesan, member of the apex rights panel, observed while issuing the notices.
Airport sources said that glass had fallen from the (false) ceiling only once, the remaining instances involving the collapse of panels from vertical glass walls.
They said there were injuries only once, when an AAI duty officer and three private airline employees were hurt by some of the topmost panels falling off a wall in 2014.
The first mishap involved more than 20 panels falling off the false ceiling at the domestic terminal on May 12, 2013.
