Flights may get delayed for repairs of main runway

Flyers will have to brace for sudden changes in flight timings from April 5 as the main runway of IGI airport is going to be under maintenance for a week. On March 18, TOI had reported that the main runway would be shut for repairs and the smallest airstrip would also be re-carpeted partially.

Airlines say that no major disruptions are expected as this is a planned shutdown, but flight schedules can change depending upon how the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) handles the traffic. Delays may be experienced due to backlog of flights.
"If the situation is not managed carefully and a proper strategy is not adopted by the ATC, then airlines may have to change their flight schedules. Piling up of planes at the airport will end in delays. However, as this shutdown is a planned one, we expect operational delays to be dealt with efficiently," said an airline's spokesperson.
The airport has three runways at present - 9/27, 10/28 and 11/29. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that two runways would be sufficient to take care of the current air traffic movement. Once the repair work of runway 10/28 is completed, the efficiency of IGI will improve further, said an official.
