International courier operations from Tiruchi airport likely by May

Tiruchi international airport which has been witnessing an upswing in export of general cargo is poised for the commencement of international courier operations soon.

A dedicated international courier terminal has been established near the export cargo terminal at the airport with infrastructure works currently apace in it.


Briefing reporters on the occasion of the 21{+s}{+t}annual day of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) here on Friday, Tiruchi Airport Director K. Gunasekaran said the international courier operations were expected to begin by May.

Infrastructure work in the international courier terminal measuring 19,500 square feet would be ready by this month, he said and added that the AAI was in touch with the Customs authorities on this issue.

Orders had been placed for the purchase of an x-ray machine to scan courier consignments, he said and added that plans were afoot to hire an x-ray machine for use in the international courier terminal till such time the new machine was procured.

The AAI would bear the cost recovery charges for deployment of manpower to be posted by the Customs authorities to man the international courier terminal, he said.
