Airports Authority of India plans aerial survey to scout for 2nd airport in Chennai

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to do a quick aerial obstacle study at new locations that will be identified by the state government for a second airport for Chennai, said AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra.
In the city to open a new domestic cargo terminal at Chennai airport, he said the state government was yet to identify land for a second airport and had told AAI officials that it would be expensive to acquire land in the southern suburbs.
"We have increased the per hour flight handling capacity of Chennai airport and it will be further increased to 40 flights per hour.
It will be difficult to increase it beyond that. We will need a second airport for Chennai," he added.
As it was already delayed, the AAI would do a quick obstacle survey and plan to clear the land selected by the government so that processes needed to set up an airport could be kicked off.
Once a site is identified, AAI will conduct a study and then International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will be roped in to conduct a feasibility study that will include flight safety, flight path and approach path of planes and the presence of a second airport in the same city.
