New Delhi: The Centre on Friday sought the Supreme Court's intervention
to help implement merger of Indian Airlines and Air India by seeking
quashing of a Bombay high court order which directed Air India Ltd to
implement Industrial Disputes Act provisions relating to employees.
A bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha issued notice to Air India Employees Union, which had successfully stalled the merger without the company implementing Section 9A of the ID Act that mandated giving them 21 days notice on change of service conditions.
Appearing for Air India Ltd, additional solicitor general L Nageswar Rao said the nature of work in airline operation was such that decisions were taken and implemented at short notice, for example change in shift timings due to requirement of aircraft, seasonal changes in the airline schedules etc.
