A day after a Mumbai-Dubai Jet flight was diverted to Muscat following a
tweet claiming that there were explosives on the plane, the police have
arrested the man behind the hoax. Apparently, he did it for fun.
According to the Punjab police, accused Surinder Partap is around 25 and a resident of Jaipur. The man, who was initially believed to be from Ludhiana based on the Twitter handle used to post the hoax, reportedly works as an HR executive in a multinational firm.
"We have traced the man to Jaipur and informed the local police," Ludhiana police commissioner Pramod Ban told PTI. Since the Mumbai police too are probing the case, they will be visiting Jaipur to seek Partap's custody.
Investigators claim that the message was taken seriously by security establishment as it was very specific and comprised hashtags like OperationBadla (which means operation revenge) and VyapamScam.
Partap, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, is believed to have told the police that he posted the bomb tweet 'casually' for fun, completely unaware of the storm that it would raise.
The accused had lived in Ludhiana for a brief period about six months ago. "That is why he had mentioned Ludhiana as his profile location. He lives on the outskirts of Jaipur in an flat shared by seven others," said source.
