Kolkata: In a year's time, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport could become one of the greenest facilities in the country with a substantially smaller carbon footprint. Though the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Monday sanctioned a 2 Mega Watt peak (MWp) solar project for Kolkata airport, the team in the city has much larger ambitions and has identified 50-60 acres to set up a 15MW solar farm that can generate nearly a quarter of its electricity requirement.
Speaking to TOI, Kolkata airport director A K Sharma said that Kolkata airport will install solar panels on the roof of the old terminal as well as other facilities to generate 2 MWp electricity by March 31, 2016 as part of the 50MW target that the ministry of renewable energy has set for airports by the end of this financial year. But Sharma wants something bigger: a 15 MW solar farm that can generate 225 lakh units and bring down its annual electricity bill by a whopping Rs 18 crore. Kolkata airport currently shells out Rs 72 crore a year on electricity bill.
