Art finds space in airport, painters thrilled

Madurai: Waiting time at the Madurai International Airport has become a little more interesting these days, after the airport began providing free spaces for artists to exhibit their works. The move has benefitted many poor artists, who otherwise have a tough time arranging exhibitions and finding potential buyers.

Hundreds of passengers who pass through the airport can catch a glimpse of the local talent, and if interested, purchase pieces that they like. Three months after it was initiated, the project has won the admiration of many passengers. The paintings are mostly displayed at the space allotted specifically for the purpose.

Each artist gets a period of 15 days to display his works. They need not pay any rent for the fortnight. They need not even wait around looking for customers, as the airport authorities have taken up the responsibility of selling the paintings and will pay the amount generated in the sales to the artist at the end of the fortnight. A nominal charge would be deducted for the sales. The price of each piece, determined by the artist, would be displayed along with the painting.
